Martin Smith

His Career so far:

  • First started in the ‘biz’ with a band called ‘Charlie’! Well it was 1974 and we honestly didn’t know what it was slang for!!!
  • Charlie went on to achieve cult status in America supporting The Who, Doobie Bros, Fleetwood Mac and Focus.
  • Over the next few years he learnt ‘the trade’ in various bands and projects including a spell with ‘Bowie’ sideman Woody Woodmansey.
  • It was around this time that he realised he was becoming more interested in the studio side of things so started to produce ‘Indie’ projects ending up working for CBS, RAK and Bronze records amongst others.
  • In 1979 landed a production contract with Bronze Records and scored a few chart entries over the next few years.
  • In 1983 teamed up with ELO sideman Richard Tandy and Dave Morgan on a solo project, which Jeff Lynn contributed to. This relationship culminated in Jeff inviting him to join ELO, which of course he agreed to after thinking about it for about 2 nano seconds!!!!!
He has fond memories of playing Wembley stadium in July 1986, 80,000 people and most of them knew the words, that was outstanding!
  • In 1987 when ELO had finally disbanded and ‘Garage Studio’ was born.  Started operations in January 1988, added the ‘live room’ in 1992 and we’re still here.
  • For the last 20 years have established a career as a Library writer for Universal and it’s satellite labels both solo and with writing partner Dominic Glynn. Have had pieces used in television drama, film and adverts all over the world. Have had a song accepted for Eurovision, had a hit album in Germany with a project called ‘The King’ worked as a producer/Engineer/Programmer with BA Robertson, Mike Rutherford, John Wetton, Bap Kennedy, Viola Wills, Tina Charles, The Real Thing, Brian Johnson- Chris Slade - AC/DC, Rick Dufay - Aerosmith, Phil Pickett, Katrina and the Waves, Franz Ferdinand, Gabriella Cilmi and many more. He recently teamed up with legendary Middle Eastern percussionist Hossam Ramzy (Peter Gabriel, Page and Plant, and Sting) to create  ‘Middle East Drama’ for Universal, which is his most current release.
